Beautiful baby Kassia came to visit me yesterday for her first professional photo session. She was a gorgeous baby. Actually, she was one of the prettiest babies I think I’ve ever seen and I have photographed a lot of babies – nearly 1000 newborns over the course of just over 9 years.
Sometimes babies are not so sleepy during their newborn sessions. And this was the case for baby Kassia yesterday. More than running a business, I love capturing moments and memories for the moms who visit me with their brand new babies.
Our memories fade as the years go on. All the tiny details of our babies of when they were just born fade with us over time. I’m not one to rush my clients out the door because time is up for a photo session. I know it can be hard getting out the door with a new baby. We make the most of our time together during a newborn session. If baby has been awake a lot during a newborn session, you can’t force them to go to sleep. Sometimes all the baby shushing techniques in the world won’t make an awake baby want to sleep.
Although baby Kassia was alert and awake yesterday, we did capture so many beautiful sleeping images. We also captured amazing bright eyed newborn pictures. When Kassia was awake, she was calm and happy just looking around so it was a perfect opportunity to capture her with her eyes open.
I want to capture images for my clients that they will love for their entire lives. Images you can look back on and remember those first few days with your newborn. Those days when you were sleep deprived and just getting used to this new addition to your family.
We probably captured enough images to fill a gallery to be presented. In my mind, newborn sessions should never be about capturing “enough”. Newborn sessions should be to create images for mom that she envisioned having for her baby. Images that she will look back on fondly years down the road to help her remember everything that was new about her baby just days old.
I look forward to seeing baby Kassia again on Wednesday so we can capture a couple more newborn set-ups. She will look adorable in the hot air balloon set-up and we’ll get to use the fairy wings mom ordered that didn’t arrive in time for her newborn session yesterday.
