Indoor Maternity Photography: An Equally Fun and Beautiful Way to Document Your Pregnancy

Toronto Maternity Photographer

In light of the more spring-like weather that’s come upon us, I’ve been writing about the many benefits of taking your maternity photography sessions outdoors. While these sessions are perfect for anyone who loves nature or who is looking for a unique way to customize their pregnancy photography, they are by no means the only way to capture images of you and your round, beautiful belly.

I thought I’d share a few of the things that make indoor maternity photography sessions advantageous too, because every woman will have her own idea of what she would like to capture and how, in her pregnancy portraits.

Wardrobe Changes and Choices to Customize Your Maternity Photography

One of the major advantages to choosing an indoor maternity photography session over one that’s held outside is that you can easily (well, as easily as a woman who’s nearing her due date can change her clothing!) incorporate wardrobe changes. Now, that’s not to say that mommas-to-be who wanted to wear more than one outfit for an outdoor session in the past haven’t been able to do so, but changing in the backseat of a car or behind a sheet that’s held by myself and your husband isn’t for everyone!

When a woman chooses to have their pregnancy photography done inside my studio, I work with them to choose several different outfits that will best compliment and show off their round belly. As I’ve said in the past, not all clothing works well for maternity photography, and while I welcome women bringing some of their own clothing, including maternity yoga pants and tank-tops, pre-pregnancy jeans that can be pulled up over hips but left undone, tube tops, scarves and pre-pregnancy sleeveless tops where the top buttons can still be done up, I also have a maternity portraits wardrobe for my clients to choose from. The items in my collection were specially designed for maternity photography and work exceptionally well to show off baby bellies.

Silhouette Maternity Photograph

While the pregnancy gowns in my collection create gorgeous, angelic images complete with flowing fabrics and perfectly draped around a woman’s belly, the more form-fitting clothing, like yoga pants and tank-tops, can be used for beautiful silhouette images, which has been a favourite style for many clients in the past.

While the women who visit my studio for pregnancy photography certainly don’t need to purchase anything for their sessions, I do ask that they bring black and white or nude underwear, as well as a strapless bra, so that undergarments don’t show through the maternity portraits clothing. Lacy undergarments, if you have them, can also be worn underneath draped, sheer fabrics to create beautiful portraits.

In the privacy and comfort of my studio’s guest bathroom, you can change your clothing to give great variety to your pregnancy photography.

Indoor Pregnancy Photography Backdrops and Lighting

Whenever a maternity photography session is held outside, we have to work with the lighting and weather conditions that Mother Nature provides to create settings that will work well for capturing the images. Inside, the opposite is true; I combine special lighting equipment and techniques with a variety of backdrops to create an environment that’s ideal for taking high quality photos.

As I mentioned, silhouettes are very popular portraits, but I also take colour or black and white pictures, use different coloured or patterned backgrounds, use fans to lift and give movement to the sheer fabrics in the maternity gowns and much more. There are countless ways to personalize an indoor maternity session so that it best represents your own unique style.

Whether the images are taken inside a studio or outside, maternity photography is a great way to not only document a special period in your life, but also to celebrate the upcoming birth of your bundle of joy.

With any maternity photography, the best time to take portraits is between 32 and 36 weeks of your pregnancy, so that if the babe decides to make their grand entrance early, you won’t miss your photo session. To book your session for maternity photography, please call 905.449.2200.
