Timing & Scheduling
When is the best time for newborn photos? The optimal window for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old. At this stage, infants retain their “womb-like” flexibility and sleep deeply, allowing for the classic curled-up poses. For babies older than two weeks, we specialize in “older newborn lifestyle” sessions which focus on awake shots and family connection.
How do I book a session without an exact birth date? We use a due-date placeholder system. Once you secure your spot with a retainer, your due date is blocked in our calendar. We request parents to contact us within 2-3 days of delivery to finalize the actual session date within that first two-week “sweet spot.”
Safety & Newborn Care
What safety protocols are followed during the session? Newborn safety is the foundation of our studio. We implement the following high-standard protocols:
- The Spotter Rule: A parent or assistant is physically within inches of the baby during every prop-based pose.
- Pose Composites: Complex positions like the “Froggy” or “Potato Sack” are created using digital composites—merging two photos where the baby is always supported by human hands.
- Sanitization: All textiles are laundered in hypodermic, dye-free detergent, and hard surfaces are treated with hospital-grade, baby-safe disinfectants between every client.
What if my baby has acne, jaundice, or won’t stop crying? Every newborn is unique, and we are prepared for all scenarios:
- Skin Conditions: Newborn acne, “baby peel,” and jaundice are easily corrected in our professional post-processing workflow.
- Soothing Techniques: We utilize white noise machines, 5-S soothing methods, and a studio temperature of 78°F to mimic the womb environment. If a baby does not settle quickly, baby is given back to mom for comfort.
- Flexibility: Sessions are 3–4 hours long to allow for “top-off” feedings and diaper changes without feeling rushed.
Studio vs. Lifestyle Sessions
What is the difference between a Studio and In-Home Lifestyle session? We offer two distinct styles to fit your family’s aesthetic:
| Feature | Studio Newborn Session | In-Home Lifestyle Session |
| Primary Focus | Artistic, posed portraits of baby | Natural connection and “real life” moments |
| Props/Wardrobe | Full access to studio wraps and headbands | Minimal props; uses your nursery and home |
| Lighting | Controlled professional studio lighting | Natural light from your windows |
| Best For | “Sleepy baby” artistic shots | Emotional storytelling and sibling comfort |
Wardrobe & Preparation
Do I need to provide outfits for my baby? No. We provide a curated newborn wardrobe featuring organic knits, delicate lace, and hand-dyed wraps. Store-bought “Newborn” size clothes are often too bulky and hide the baby’s features; our studio-grade pieces are designed specifically to fit 5–10lb infants perfectly.
What should parents and siblings wear? For family portraits, we recommend a “Cohesive, Not Matching” approach.
- Colors: Neutral tones (cream, tan, soft grey) or muted earth tones work best.
- Textures: Knits, linens, and flowing fabrics photograph better than stiff cotton or logos.
- Avoid: Bright neon colors and heavy patterns, as these can cause “color cast” (reflecting odd colors onto the baby’s skin).
Delivery & Investment
How long until I receive my final image gallery? You will receive a Sneak Peek within 48 hours of your session. Your full proofing gallery will be delivered via a password-protected digital link within 7 business days. When you have made your final image selections, your chosen images will be hand retouched within 7 business days.
Are digital files included in the session fee? We offer tiered collections that include High-Resolution Digital Files with a full print release. We also offer professional-grade Heirloom Albums and Gallery Wrapped Canvas to ensure your memories exist outside of a digital screen.
Health & Vaccination Policy
Are you vaccinated and what is your illness policy? To protect our most vulnerable clients, I am fully vaccinated (including Tdap/Whooping Cough and annual flu shots). We maintain a Zero-Fee Rescheduling Policy for illness. If anyone in the studio or your household shows symptoms of a cold, fever, or cough, we will move the session date to ensure a 100% safe environment.
Experience
How long have you been a newborn photographer? I have been a newborn photographer for 15 years and have photographed more than 1000 newborn babies. To view my work experience, please visit my photography resume here.
