This past weekend I had the pleasure of mentoring a wonderful photographer from Markham, Ontario who is starting up his own maternity and newborn photography business.
The weekend covered set-up for newborn photography sessions, soothing techniques, posing and newborn safety. We also discussed pricing, business and marketing strategies. Digital workflow was covered for my processing as well as workflow.
We had two beautiful newborn models and three gorgeous expectant mothers.
During our second day together, we covered an introduction to studio lighting and used a variety of different lighting techniques during our maternity modeling sessions.
Newborn photography is best learned with hands on experience. During mentorship classes, students have an opportunity to assist with posing and set-ups. I always recommend completing at least 5 newborn sessions on your own. Each student has a follow-up session within 3 months of attending a mentoring class so that they can refresh what they have learned.
Here is a sneak peek from our first modeling session from Saturday morning. I just love the yellow set-up!
