Newborns don’t tend to smile unless they have gas. They are not developed enough to be able to do two things at once so it is very hard for them to smile while moving their arms & legs. In most cases, it’s just a matter of timing & being patient enough to wait for a smile and to click the shutter release fast enough at just the right time. Once babies are a couple of months old you can make funny noises and they will respond.
Sometimes I will just hover over baby and wait for a smile. I do this when I see some movement with babies eyes or mouth. I can pick up on cues for a possible smile coming. If it looks like I’m just holding the camera and not pressing the shutter, chances are your baby is about to smile.
The baby girl featured in this blog post was adorable to photograph. It’s obvious how much mom and dad love their new bundle of joy. Thank you so much “J” for choosing me to be your newborn photographer.
