Picton and the surrounding landscape of Prince Edward County possess a rare, ethereal beauty that feels like a well-kept secret, even as it draws travelers from across the province. There is a specific kind of magic found in “The County” – a blend of rustic charm and refined elegance that you simply cannot find anywhere else in Ontario. To spend a day there is to be surrounded by limestone-rich soil, rolling hills, and the shimmering, expansive presence of Lake Ontario, which creates a microclimate that makes the region feel more like the French countryside than a rural Canadian township.
This natural splendor serves as the ultimate canvas for photography, as evidenced by the breathtaking maternity session featured here. Held at a local estate winery, the session perfectly captured the harmony between the land and the glow of motherhood. The images from that day were nothing short of stunning; they didn’t just document a pregnancy, they told a story of new beginnings set against the timeless backdrop of the vines. There is something profoundly symbolic about a maternity shoot in a vineyard—the idea of growth, the patience of the seasons, and the ultimate harvest of something beautiful.
The way Chandra Lee utilized the soft, golden light of Prince Edward County in those portraits was masterful. In the images, the estate winery provides a sense of grandeur and intimacy all at once. You can almost feel the warm breeze moving through the rows of grapes and hear the quiet rustle of the leaves. The architecture of the winery, combined with the organic textures of the fields, created a sophisticated yet earthy aesthetic that made the expectant mother look like a vision of grace. Seeing how those images turned out, it is impossible not to dream of returning to that exact spot. The County has a way of calling you back, and the desire to recreate that photographic magic is strong.
Thinking of a future session there brings a sense of excitement. Whether it’s the way the rows of vines create perfect leading lines for a portrait, or the way the limestone buildings reflect the afternoon sun, Picton and its surrounding wineries offer a level of visual depth that is a photographer’s dream. The “stunning” quality of those previous images wasn’t just a fluke of good lighting; it was the result of a world-class photographer working in a world-class location.
I find myself constantly looking back at those photos, imagining a return to that tranquil, beautiful setting. To stand once again amidst the heritage charm of Picton and the sprawling beauty of a Prince Edward County estate would be more than just a photo shoot; it would be a chance to reconnect with the serenity of the land. The memory of those stunning maternity images serves as a constant reminder of why this location is so special, and why I would give anything to experience another session in that picturesque paradise. It is a place where memories aren’t just captured—they are elevated into art.
As a maternity photographer, I find inspiration for portraits and incredibly beautiful and unique backdrops for sessions, wherever I go. It’s a part of the job, I suppose, trying to resist the urge to grab my camera when the light is just right or the architecture unique.
When I recently visited a beautiful estate winery in idyllic Prince Edward County with the lovely momma-to-be who is pictured here, I could hardly contain my excitement; everywhere I looked, there were amazing settings in which I could pose this woman during her session. I feel very fortunate that the owner of this winery granted me permission to host a total of five maternity photography sessions on her beautiful property that day.
The winery’s tasting area and cellar are situated in a rustically beautiful barn, and although I was unsure of where I would take photos indoors when I first arrived, I soon discovered that the antique furniture, wooden stairway, rough barn beams and large picture windows offered many opportunities for taking photos during the maternity photography sessions. I love how this new maternity gown looks when juxtaposed with all of the wooden accents in the building and around the winery.
When the owner’s daughter took us down into the wine cellar, I was able to capture an image of this beautiful pregnant woman next to the wine barrels, a very unique image to say the least.
While I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of gorgeous images I was able to take indoors, I knew that the winery’s grounds would offer a nearly endless number of backdrop options. The property at the winery, which included gardens and long grasses, a pond and, of course, the vineyards, provided settings that would excite any maternity photographer. The images are magical!
The session took place at three o’clock in the afternoon, a time of day where the sunlight is rather harsh and not ideal for photo taking. But, outdoor photo sessions often require improvisation, and we found soft diffused lighting under and around the trees that lined the property. I just love how these portraits turned out!
Stay tuned to see portraits from the four other sessions that took place at this lovely location.
