As a Newborn Photographer, I specialize in photographing babies that are under ten days of age. Having been in business for nearly eight years, I have had the opportunity to meet almost 800 families and their newly born babies.
The ideal time to photograph your little one is between day five and day eight of your baby’s arrival. This is because babies are generally very sleepy in the first few days of being born. Usually, on day five, a newborn baby sleeps easily and will pose faster and therefore lead to more variety of images in a newborn session.
I have been so fortunate to meet so many families over the last seven, almost eight years.
Newborn Photographer for Babies and Families
Many families come to the studio again when they have their second or third baby and it is nice to see the families again and watch their children grow.
This lovely family had their second baby boy. In 2011, I had the pleasure of meeting them for the first time when they welcomed their first baby boy into the world.
It was nice to see the resemblance between the new baby and his big brother. When I began photographing their new baby, I saw the resemblance even more on my camera display. Both children shared the same adorable peach fuzz on the side of their cheeks, which I love to capture with my macro lens. It’s these tiny details that will fade and soon be forgotten and newborn photography helps to remember this special time.
Below is a picture taken at a recent newborn photography session.
Newborn photography sessions are long, between 3 and 5 hours. It generally takes 3 hours to photograph a newborn baby. This allows me as your photographer to take my time and ensure that your baby is comfortable throughout your session.
It takes time and patience for each pose to be perfected so that baby’s fingers are relaxed instead of in fists. I sit with your newborn and hold their tiny hand until they relax and then gently I move their hand under their chin.
Some Details About Newborn Photography Sessions
The studio is kept warm for your session. In the womb babies are 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius.
Babies don’t enjoy being changed or being naked because it makes them cold so it makes sense that during a newborn session to keep the temperature warm to simulate a baby’s environment in utero. The temperature is kept at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29.4 degrees Celsius throughout a newborn session. This temperature keeps baby comfortable throughout your photography session.
The second and equally most important criteria for a newborn session is to keep baby well fed. Day five is usually the earliest day to photograph a new baby as a mother’s milk usually does not arrive until day three; four or sometimes day five after baby has arrived. It is best to have one day elapse between breast milk arriving and a newborn session taking place. This allows time for breastfeeding to be established prior to attending your session with your newborn photographer.
If baby is being formula fed, sessions can take place as soon as parents arrive home from the hospital.
Once we are equipped with a warm studio and a well-fed baby, we are ready to begin your session.
Before I begin posing and photographing a new baby, I spend time with the baby for at least 10 to 15 minutes. You can always see me by the window that provides the natural light to photograph your baby walking gently and rocking your little one. I am a stranger to this new little person and this gives baby time to get used to me. Your baby has quickly bonded with mom and dad and siblings and has spent the last nine months listening to the sounds around them including the voices of family members.
Once baby has fallen into a deep sleep in my arms I begin to unwrap your baby from his or her swaddled blanket so baby is not woken up.
Now it’s time to have fun and pose your baby in the adorable newborn poses you see here in the galleries. Even more variety and recent sneak peeks can always be found on the Facebook page.
The studio space is approximately 1250 square feet. There are three separate rooms dedicated to my photography space in an open concept layout. One area is dedicated to photographing your newborn with natural light. Another area is an office space where samples can be viewed of hard cover story albums, gallery wrapped canvas and other product offerings.
There is an entire room for clients to sit during their session. This room has a seating area. Toys are available including some Legos, a Fisher Price play station, children books and crayons and coloring books. This helps to keep older children entertained throughout your session.
Siblings are always welcome to attend a newborn photography session. Many of my clients drive a far distance to see me for newborn portraits and my studio has the space to accommodate older children for a newborn session.
If clients are local and it is possible for parents, I recommend having a friend or family member bring older siblings near the end of a newborn session for family pictures. This is only because newborn sessions are long making children impatient.
Family pictures are always welcome during each and every newborn session. We focus on your newborn for the first three hours of your session. Sibling and family images are never rushed and a full two hours is devoted to family and sibling images.
The studio is always being updated with new bonnets, hairpieces, newborn rompers, dresses, wraps, layering fabrics, flokati, posing fabrics and props.
A few new arrivals are on their way now from JD Vintgage props including a new addition to our flokati supplies – a beautiful extra large soft grey flokati, a new amazing ruler crate which I just love to pieces and an oval mesh basket and I almost forgot, a new natural wooden bowl with a unique shape. All of these items will make a wonderful addition to the prop inventory on hand and available for client’s use and enjoyment.
Also arriving are a few new organic bonnets in dark sapphire blue, soft pink and plum with matching soft merino wool wraps.
Today will be a second day in a row spent editing all day doing what I love and I look forward to receiving the new items to the studio soon.
