Another beautiful baby girl in the studio at just 7 days new. Thank you so much “M” and “K” for choosing me to be your newborn photographer again. It was wonderful to see all of you again. Congrats on the newest addition to your family and here is a sneak peek from your session.
The best time for newborn portraits is between 5 and 8 days of your baby’s arrival. After 10 days babies are much more alert and awake and aware of their surroundings.
Yesterday, I found myself sifting through YouTube videos of newborn photographers showing various posing, soothing and wrapping techniques. More than anything, I was listening to the words the newborn photographers used. While watching the videos, I found myself hearing things such as “I get what I need in two hours” or “my focus is on sellable images”. I watched one photographer as she set up an almost one month old baby in a basket. The baby was wrapped while it was awake and crying. The baby was then placed in a basket and photographed in a few different poses changing the hands slightly. Then a couple of headbands were added for variety, then a hat and then a fabric was placed over baby. In 15 minutes, the photographer had 15 “sellable images”.
I could do this too. But . . . I don’t.
My sessions are long. Each pose is worked on until it is perfect. I am not interested in adding different fabrics or headbands to the same pose to fill up a viewing gallery. My work is a reflection of my art. Sure, I am in business; however, I do not want to be known as the photographer whose focus is on “sellable” images.
At the end of every photography session, I want to look back and be proud of the work I have created.
The babies are cared for as if they were my own during my photography sessions. I don’t allow babies to cry and will instantly soothe a fussy infant.
For whatever reason, the babies seem to love me. I am grateful so many people come to see me with their newborn babies to have the first few days of their newborn baby’s life documented in such a special way.
